What to do if you’ve lost your pet
Act fast! By law, Colorado shelters are required to keep lost pets for 5 days.
Visit EVERY shelter -- the description you give over the phone may not match someone else's description of your pet, and many pets are found farther than 10 miles from where they were lost. File a lost report and leave a current photo at all shelters you visit.
Check shelter websites (see list below) daily. If you see your pet on a shelter’s website, contact that shelter IMMEDIATELY. Shelters often require proof of ownership and charge a reclaim fee.
If your pet has been missing for more than 5 days, check pets for adoption at shelters.
Notify friends and neighbors that your pet is lost.
Contact veterinary clinics in your area. Use their “Lost and Found” bulletin boards.
Check “found” ads and post a “lost” ad in newspapers and on Craigslist.
Check websites such as www.craigslist.org, www.dogdetective.com, and www.petharbor.com.
Post fliers in a minimum 3-mile radius of where you lost your pet.
Call your local animal control agency to submit a lost pet report.
Don’t give up! Pets can be found months after they’re lost.
